Hardwood floor installation and refinishing for Maple Grove homes

Hardwood floor installation and refinishing in Maple Grove follows the way the city grew. The neighborhoods around Arbor Lakes and Rush Creek went up in the 1990s and 2000s with maple and red oak that is now worn through, and new construction is still going in around the edges of the city. Alpine Hardwood works both ends of that from our shop in Cokato, and we have been doing it since 2007.

Getting there

We come to Maple Grove from Cokato, about 50 miles. The route is Highway 12 east to 494, then north to I-94 or Highway 610 depending on which side of the city the job is on. We plan each job as full days on site, so the distance does not add trips.

Maple Grove's subdivision maple and red oak at refinishing age

Maple Grove added most of its houses between the late 1980s and the late 2000s, and the flooring in them follows a pattern we see every week. Kitchens and entries got maple or red oak, usually 2 1/4 or 3 1/4 inch strip, a lot of it factory-finished because it went in fast during the building boom. Family rooms and bedrooms got carpet. Twenty-plus years on, the hardwood is worn in a path from the garage door to the sink and the finish is cloudy, while the carpet beside it is on its third replacement. The common project now is a full refinish of the existing hardwood plus an install that carries the same floor into the rooms that were carpeted. We sand the old and new together so they finish as one floor, with no visible line at the old doorway. Red oak takes that well. Maple is harder to match board for board because the color varies, so we sort the new boards against the old before they go down.

What the Maple Grove climate does to a wood floor

Maple Grove houses are mostly forced-air, and in January the indoor humidity in a typical one drops below 25 percent. Solid wood shrinks across its width in that air, which is why the winter gaps between boards show up every year and close again in July. That is normal movement and a finish cannot stop it. What causes trouble is wood that was not acclimated before install, or a floor laid tight to the walls with no expansion gap, and both show up as cupping or buckling the first humid summer. On the newer builds out toward Elm Creek Park Reserve, a lot of plans call for engineered white oak over in-floor heat or on a slab, and that is the right call. Engineered boards move far less with the seasons. In an older house with solid oak, a humidifier on the furnace keeps the winter gaps smaller and the finish from cracking at the joints.

New construction in Maple Grove, scheduled to the builder's week

Maple Grove still builds, and we work with builders there on production plans and custom homes. The hard part of hardwood on a new build is timing. The floor has to go in after the house is closed in and the HVAC is running, with the wood acclimated in the house, and before cabinets and trim if it is site-finished. Builders schedule around that window, and when the drywall slips a week the floor has to slip with it. We keep enough crews that we can move one when a schedule moves, and the finish is held to the same standard whichever crew shows up. For homeowners, the equivalent is a remodel where the kitchen contractor needs the floor down on a specific day, and we can usually hit it. Prefinished wide plank goes fastest on those jobs because there is no cure time. Site-finished costs a few extra days but hides the small height differences between boards and lets you pick any color.

Refinishing hardwood floors in Maple Grove

The hardwood floor refinishing page covers the Maple Grove case in detail: a 1990s or 2000s maple or red oak floor that has worn through in the traffic lanes, and whether a full sand or a buff and coat is the right fix for it. How a refinish runs, start to finish.

Questions from Maple Grove homeowners

My Maple Grove house has hardwood in the kitchen and carpet everywhere else. Can you extend the hardwood and make it match?

Yes, and it is the most common install we do in Maple Grove. We take out the carpet, install new boards of the same species and width, then sand the old and new floors together and finish them as one. On red oak the match is close to invisible. On maple we sort boards for color first.

How do I know if my floor needs a full refinish or just a buff and coat?

Look at the worst spots, usually in front of the sink and at the back door. If the wood there is gray or bare, the finish is gone and only a full sand will fix it. If the floor is dull and scratched but still sealed everywhere, a buff and coat is enough. We confirm in person before we quote.

Can you put hardwood over the in-floor heat in my new Maple Grove build?

Yes, with engineered hardwood rather than solid. Engineered boards have a layered core that stays stable over radiant heat, where solid boards shrink and gap when the slab warms up in winter. We coordinate with the builder on when the system runs so the wood acclimates to real conditions. Wide plank white oak is the common choice.

How far in advance do we need to book a refinish in Maple Grove?

A few weeks is typical, and more in spring and late summer when everyone wants floors done before school starts or before the holidays. Builder work is booked further out. If you have a hard date, such as a move-in or a listing, tell us when you call and we will say whether we can make it.
