The Twin Cities' top builders put Alpine floors in their homes, and homeowners call us to replace a worn floor or refinish one worth keeping. Solid or engineered, prefinished or finished in the house, plain plank or herringbone, we have laid it and we know how it behaves through a Minnesota winter. We run enough crews to be on site the week a builder needs us, and the finish is held to the same standard in a new build or a refinish.

We install and refinish hardwood floors in Wayzata, Edina, Minnetonka and Orono, an hour east of the shop on Highway 12.

It was a pleasure to work with Alpine Hardwood — from the first contact to the finished job. They refinished our 26 year old Maple hardwood floors and the end result was truly better than new.

Species we install

The hardwoods we install most, and what each one is good for.

Each species moves with the seasons in its own way and takes stain differently. These are the ones we install most, with the numbers we use to choose between them. Scroll sideways.

Common widths
2 1/4 inch strip in older homes; 5 to 7 inch plank in most new builds; 8 to 10 inch in engineered formats
Finishes it takes

Common widths
2 1/4 and 3 1/4 inch strip in 1990s and 2000s subdivisions; 4 to 5 inch plank new
Finishes it takes
Water-based polyurethane to keep it pale; oil-based ambers it toward gold; light stains and whitewash only

Janka hardness
1,820 (the hardest common domestic species; about a third harder than white oak)

Plain sawn; calico and rustic grades show the most sapwood and heartwood contrast, select grades the least
Common widths
3 1/4 to 5 inch solid; 5 to 7 inch engineered, often hand-scraped or wire-brushed
Finishes it takes
Oil-based or water-based polyurethane; natural and medium stains; dark stains calm the variation

Typical cuts
Plain sawn for the broad ribbon grain; some quartered for straighter lines

Finishes it takes
Clear finishes almost always; water-based keeps the purple undertone, oil-based warms it; hardwax oil suits it well

Where woodworking meets flooring · 4525 Omer Ave SW, Cokato

We lay prefinished floors, and we sand and finish floors in place. Both get the same crews and the same standard.

Sourced

We order the species, width and cut your plan calls for, solid or engineered, and keep sample boards at the shop in Cokato.

Laid

The wood sits in your house until its moisture matches the room. We check the subfloor before the first board goes down.

Finished

We sand on site with dust containment, match the stain to your approved sample and cure the coats in place.

How a floor gets built

How we build a hardwood floor, in six steps.

Most installs take three to five days on site. New construction runs on the builder's calendar, and we have enough crews to be there the week the schedule calls for.

How we work with builders
  1. One

    Visit and measure

We walk the house and check the subfloor for moisture. Then we talk through species, width and finish.

  2. Two

    Sample boards

We make stain and finish samples on your wood, in your light, before any boards are ordered.

  3. Three

    Order and acclimate

We order the boards, treads and inlays for your floor and deliver them to sit in your home until the moisture matches.

  4. Four

    Lay

Our crew lays the floor. Chevron and herringbone get laid out full-scale before the first board goes down.

  5. Five

    Sand and finish

We sand with dust containment, stain to the approved sample and cure the coats on site.

  6. Six

    Walk-through

We go over care and cure times and tell you when the furniture can come back. Our care guide stays with the house.
